Away with the old hand creams, here come the new anti aging hand creams. I have long waited for decent hand creams that do more than just moisturizing the skin on the hands. I still can't explain why it took the cosmetic industry so long to bring their attention to the hands. Women were literally hiding their aging hands because their faces were looking 10 years younger than their hands. You know what they say... "You can tell the true age by the skin on the hands...". No more of that! The new anti aging hand creams are making the hands look like they have never seen work before.

The skin on our hands is exposed to the worst aging accelerators. If you are a mother, like me, you know that 90% of your time your hands are in the water with washing, wiping, peeling and so on.

The hands are exposed to more water, cleaners, chemicals, UV rays than your skin on the face will ever see. Our hands are likely to age up to 10 times faster than our face. Why? Because we are less likely to protect our hands from external factors as much as we protect our face. Or when was the last time you've applied a hand mask?

The good news is, that with new technologies of an anti aging hand cream you can reverse some of the aging on your hands and with a little attention keep them beautiful and youthful.

Signs of Aging Hands

The most prominent aging signs on the hands are age spots. Also called sun spots or liver spots. These pigmentation marks can vary from light to dark brown and differ in size. Age spots appear when the melanin production in the skin has been disrupted due to excessive sun exposure. The hands being exposed to the sun more than any other part of the body suffer from pigmentation marks quickly.

Another effect of UV exposure on the hands is loose skin. This loss of elasticity is due to the break down of elastin in the skin.

For reversing the signs of aging on the hands, it is necessary to do more intense treatments on a regular basis. I recommend following anti aging hand regime once a week:

Exfoliation

Off with the rough dry skin. The hands should be exfoliated once a week. You can use a rougher exfoliant than your facial exfoliant as the skin on the hands is not as sensitive and delicate.

Peels

You could use a peel instead of an exfoliant every 2 to 3 weeks. Peels that are based on glycolic acid or AHA's are safe and stimulating new skin growth which helps towards a firmer skin. Peels also have the ability to tone down pigmentation marks which makes them ideal for the use on the hands.

Hand Mask

Once dry skin cells are removed the skin is receptive for an intensive moisture treatment. Try a hand mask or rich hand cream. Wear gloves to maximise the effect.

Paraffin Hand Treatment

For a special treat you can spoil yourself to a paraffin hand treatment at a salon. After exfoliation, an intensive hand treatment is applied, then the hands are dipped into the warm paraffin wax. The warmth pushes the ingredients of the hand treatment even deeper into the skin. The result is instant smoother and younger looking hands.

Hot Oil Treatment

This can be easily done at home. Warm up a little vegetable oil like wheatgerm or olive oil and add a few drops aromatherapy oils such as Geranium or Rose. Apply the warm oil onto the hands and massage until the oil is absorbed. This is ideal for dry hands or hands that suffer from Rheumateud Arthritis as the massage also stimulates the circulation.

Sunblock - Your Hands Best Friend

For day time your best anti aging hand cream is a sunblock. I keep a special SPF45 sunblock in my handbag at all times and re apply several times during the day. In my view, this is all you need for the day. I save my good anti aging hand cream for the night when it has time to do it's job. However, there are very good hands creams on the market that contain UV protection as well as nourishing ingredients.

The sunblock is aging prevention for the hands. The earlier you start using sunblock on your hands the more you can prevent the skin aging of the hands.

I recommend a sunblock with a minimum of SPF 20 for the use on the hands that contains nourishing oils to prevent moisture loss and antioxidants for extra protection.

Natural sun blocks contain zinc oxide which provide immediate protection and often contain natural oils. Chemical sun blocks need to be applied 20 minutes before you go into the sun.

What works for the face, works for the hands too. Anti aging cosmetic ingredients that firm, lift and brighten the skin on the face are also best for the hands. However, the skin is slightly thicker on the hands and need different formulations.

Retinol

Retinol is a great ingredient for anti aging hand creams. I'm not a great fan of it for the use in the face as it can be quite strong and irritating, however, it is ideal for the skin on the hands. Retinol, or Vitamin A, has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin where it promotes the formation of collagen. Collagen and Elastin are the building blocks of the skin. Retinol is used for the treatment of sun damaged skin and age spots, which is often a great concern on the hands. Retinol in hand creams are great for hands that are sun damaged and show age spots.

Peptides

Just like Retinol, Peptides work in the restoration of collagen and elastin. Peptides are a popular ingredient in many anti wrinkle products. Peptides are ideal for the use on sensitive skin as they are non-irritating. Anti Aging Hand Creams with peptides are great to rejuvenate old looking hands. They work well on improving the skin elasticity.

AHA's

Alpha Hydroxy Acids speed up the cell renewal and therefore contribute to a more firmer and refined skin. AHA's are used in higher concentrations as peels or as intensive treatment. AHA's are often used in combination with other ingredients.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has the ability to lighten and refine the skin. It is also stimulating the production of collagen in the skin. It's antioxidant actions makes it an ideal ingredient in an anti aging hand cream.

A once a week special hand treatment and the daily use of an anti aging hand cream makes a huge difference in the appearance of your hands. Unfortunately our hands are exposed to aging acellerators all the time. Protect your hands as much as possible by using protctive gloves wherever possible as well as sunblock when going outside. The damage on the skin is not noticeable straight away as it accumulates over time. Protection is better than treatment.
