Anti Aging Makeup
Application, Products and Advice for a Youthful Appearance
Anti Aging Makeup can enhance your appearance and diminish the signs of aging. Appearance enhancing cosmetic products include all foundations, powder, eye shadow, concealers, eyeliner, eye pencil and many more, commonly known as make up.
The use of makeup can not only enhance your appearance but also boost your self-esteem and confidence.
If you are happy with your image it will reflect in the way you portray yourself.
Anti Aging Make-up can make you look years younger. Mind and body connect. When you look younger you will feel younger too and if you feel good about yourself you are more positive, have a greater immune system resistance and are more active. This reflects directly to your health and ultimately the aging process.
Anti aging makeup is not about following the latest trend. It's about enhancing your appearance to a more youthful and radiant you. Even though dark purple lipstick may be the trend this season, it most probably will not suit a women over 50 years of age and make her look any younger.
The key is to use the colours and shades that enhance your personal facial features and hide any imperfections. Celebrity Makeup Artists use these techniques for the most glamorous results.
Beware of Toxic Make-Up
It is a medically recognised fact that our body absorbs significant amounts of what we put on our skin.
- The average adult uses 9 personal care products daily exposing them to 126 chemicals every day!
- 89% of 10,500 ingredients used in personal care products have NOT been evaluated for safety.
- Over the last 30 years, only 9 of those 10,500 ingredients in personal care products have been banned or restricted.
- One third of all personal care products contain one or more ingredients classified as possible human carcinogens.
The FDA Regulations on the use of toxins in cosmetics still allows manufacturers to use harmful ingredients in their skin care and cosmetic products. Tests performed by a consumer safety group found that nearly two-thirds of 33 brand-name lipsticks contained lead, often in excess of the FDA's maximums for lead in candy. Another study in Japan showed that products containing the chemical preservative methyl-paraben causing the skin to age prematurely.
To avoid toxic chemicals in skin care and cosmetic products I prefer Organic Make-Up.
Anti Aging Makeup Tips
Go easy on the make up
Anti Aging make up can enhance your features but when applied too much of it, it can make you look older.
Avoid powder
Unfortunately one of the common side-effects of aging in women is the appearance of facial hair. Facial hair can appear anywhere on the face, but is most prominent on the upper lip, around the chin and chawline as well as on the cheeks. Powder makeup can pronounce the facial hair by lifting the hairs up making them more visible.
Reflect the light
Use anti aging makeup foundations that compliment your skin tone and contain light reflecting particles that are illuminating any imperfections and make lines and wrinkles less prominent.
Colour scheme
Go for light and warm colours when using lip stick, lip gloss or eye shadow. Lighter tones make a more natural and youthful look. Although stay away from colours that are too bright.
Eye brow pencil
The hormones may make the facial hairs grow all over the face, however the eyebrows often go thinner with age and loose their natural full shape. An eye brow pencil can help to make them look fuller and regain shape. Be careful though not to draw a straight line. Use small feathery strokes instead. See anti aging secrets for tips on the perfect eye brow shape.
A regular eye brow tint and shape helps to keep them looking great. Another option is to have your eye brows tattooed. I have recommended this option to many clients if there is hardly any eyebrow left that is worth tinting. When done from a professional the result looks absolutely natural.
Line those lips
The lips loose their natural fresh red colour with age and can look rather dry and dull. A lip pencil can enhance your beautiful lip shape and give the lips colour. Apply the lip liner or pencil all over your lips and use a lip gloss or lip stick on top. A lip liner also helps to avoid the lip stick bleeding and rubbing off.

Anti Aging Makeup - The Basics
Foundation
Your foundation is the most important anti aging makeup product. Foundation that is the right colour and consistency can make your skin look flawless and healthy. Depending on your skin, you may not have to apply foundation all over the face. Use where needed.
Foundation Colour
It can be challenging to get the colour right of your foundation. However, this is most important. The wrong colour can have the opposite effect that you may want to achieve.
Do not choose the colour by trying it on the back of your hands. Try different shades across your cheek. The face is the only place where you should test the colour. You are looking for a colour that literally disappears on your skin.
Depending on the season you may have to adjust the colour of your foundation from time to time. If you can't find the right colour or if you are not sure, ask a makeup expert for advice.
Foundation Consistency
The consistency of your anti aging makeup must suit your skin type. An oily skin type should use a foundation that is oil free and may even contain ingredients that help to stop the oil flow.
A dry skin on the contrary would benefit from a foundation that is oil based and provides moisture to the skin.
I prefer to use a liquid foundation that is light in consistency and smooth easily onto the skin. Anti aging makeup cakes and other powder foundation are better for younger skin. Tinted moisturisers only give minimal coverage and are best for the sommer or younger skin.
Foundation Ingredients
Some anti aging foundations claim to firm and lift the skin. In my view, an anti aging makeup foundation is designed to stay on top of the skin to provide coverage. Foundation does not penetrate into the skin to be able to work like an anti aging skin treatment. However antioxidants and sun filters in foundations help to protect the skin from environmental damage.
The foundation should contain an SPF for sun protection. I have found this to be easier than having to apply a separate sun block.
Make sure that your anti aging foundation contains illuminating ingredients that reflect the light off impurities, make your skin look flawless and take attention away from lines and wrinkles.
Sensitive skin types should avoid any ingredients that may be irritating to their skin. (fragrance, chemical sunscreen or aha's.)
Foundation Application
Every make up artist seems to have a different opinion on how to apply foundation. Some use a sponge, others the fingers. Use whatever you feel most comfortable doing.
Always use an anti aging skin care product under your foundation.
Start to apply the foundation in the center of the face blending it outwards careful not to drag the skin. Remove any makeup lines on the neck.

Concealer
Concealers are one of the best anti aging makeup products and are most useful to hide any imperfections like broken capillaries, pimples, pigmentation marks or dark circles under your eyes.
Concealer Colour
The concealer should have a yellow undertone about 2 shades lighter than your skin tone. A yellow tone will counteract dark circles and red spots, while a pink undertone would more accentuate it.
Concealer Consistency
Concealer sticks are the better option than liquid concealers as they stay put. Liquid concealers contain often a high amount of oil which makes them glide off. Some concealer sticks are difficult to apply and need to be warmed slightly by running it up and down on the back of your hand.
Concealer Application
A concealer should always be applied on top of the foundation. If done the other way around you may run risk to wipe the concealer off. Apply a moisturiser to the skin before applying the concealer, but let it soak in first.
Eye Shadow
Using eye shadow can help to lift the eyes and make your eyes stand out.
Eye shadow colour
To make your eyes look younger, go for lighter warm shades as they have a uplifting effect while darker colours deepen.
Colours that are too bright can look very unnatural, but don't be put off by the colours in the palettes as they can look more intense than they actually are. Experiment and try different shades and looks.
Eye shadow consistency
For anti aging, powder eye shadows are the better choice as they stay on better than a cream version.
Eye shadow application
The professionals use 3 makeup shades from the same colour family. The darkest colour goes on the eyelid, the medium colour in the eye socket and the palest shade up and out towards the outer corner of the eyebrow. One shade blends into the other. It is best to use a brush for this. Avoid letting the eye shadow sit in lines.
Eye definition
Use eyeliner, brow pencil and mascara to define your eyes. Softer colours work better with age and look more natural. Use brown or charcoal instead of black for example.
Eyeliners can make the eyes look more droopy. Try a white eye pencil instead to lift the lid visually.
Mascara is a great way to open up the eyes visually and distract from the lines around the eyes. However, a too dark or too thick mascara application does not look good with age. Go for the natural look instead with softer colours. Alternatively an eyelash tint can give the lashes some natural colour, than use a clear mascara to lift them up.
Lip definition
With age the lips loose their natural fresh rosy colour. The use of a lipstick becomes an essential that can transform your look dramatically.

Lip colour
The lip stick does not need to match your nails or other makeup but should compliment your skin tone. With age lighter shades are more suitable.
Olive skin should opt for warm shades while fair shades suit just about any colour. Dark complexions suit deep reds with dark purple undertones or deep browns best.
Use a shiny lip tone or finish with a gloss for a more fresher younger look.
Lipstick application
Use a lip pencil to outline the lips and as base for the lipstick. The lipstick will last longer that way. For a best result, use a lip brush and apply two layers. Then reapply when necessary throughout the day.
I personally use my lip balm with sun block as base under the lip liner to protect my lips from UV damage!
Blusher
The use of a blusher can draw attention away from crows feet around the eyes. The blusher is often an underrated anti aging makeup product due to bad colour choices. Use soft browns and peaches instead of pink. Creamy formulations give the face a flattering look. Work the blusher with the contours of your face. Be careful not to apply too much colour.
