Skin Care, Product and Treatment Advice From Your Beauty Therapist

Are you using the right anti aging skin care products?

As a Beauty Therapist I give anti aging skin care advice and product recommendations that are suitable for your skin type.

There are thousands of different anti aging skin care products available on the market today. Skin care products range from creams to serums, lotions and gels. Some are water based, others oil based and contain a variety of different ingredients. More or less, all of them promise to reverse aging and make wrinkles go away.

Choose The Right Product for Your Skin Type

Anti aging skin care products contain active ingredients that will make your skin youthful. However it's the other ingredients and the consistency that are helping to maintain skins balance and health.

To avoid skin problems my advice is to choose the right products for your skin type. This can be difficult as most anti aging skin care products only state that they are "anti aging".

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice for Your Skin Type

skin care advice

Your anti aging skin care regime should start as early as possible. Below are the basic skin care regime for each skin type. I have not included the eye area as the skin around the eyes usually differs to the rest of the face. Please see Anti Aging Eye Cream for advice.

The basic skin types are normal, oily and dry. Your skin could also have any combination of these skin types as well as a skin condition like dehydration and/or sensitivity. Then there are skin disorders like pigmentation, eczema, acne etc.

The anti aging skin care advice outlined below are basic guidelines. Each skin is different and need to be treated individual.

Skin Types

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Normal Skin

Normal skin has a sufficient balance of water and oil and is not overly sensitive and allergy prone.

Cleanser: Gentle anti aging cleansing milk or gel

Toner: Alcohol free toner for normal skin

Exfoliant: Exfoliating scrub

Mask: Alternate with deep cleansing mask and nourishing mask

Day Cream: Daily moisturising lotion with SPF

Night Cream: Nourishing anti aging night cream (not too heavy)

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Oily Skin

Oily skin can be either a permanent condition or it can appear through different stages like pregnancy or menopause when the internal hormone balance has been disrupted. Oily skin shows as oily shine all over the face, enlarged pores due to the excess oil flow and often a sallow dull complexion with thick skin texture.

Oily skin benefits most from skin care products that are oil free or water based. Care should be taken not to use too harsh products that "strip" the skin of all the oil and disturb the normal ph balance.

Exfoliating is very important for oily skin as the oil causes the skin cells to stick together and clog pores.

I always advice balancing products to regulate the oil flow. In general I do not agree with products that contain high amounts of alcohol. I have also found nutritional products very helpful in the treatment of oily skin.

Cleanser: Liquid anti aging cleanser or cleansing gel for normal skin (this is gentler to the skin and helps to regulate the normal ph balance)

Toner: Gentle toner with no alcohol that includes antiseptic ingredients like tea tree, basil, camphor, geranium, lemongrass, lavender or sandalwood.

Exfoliant: Exfoliating scrub 2 to 3 times per week or the use of an AHA based serum on a daily basis.

Mask: Deep cleansing mask twice per week.

Day Cream: Light water based anti aging moisturiser including natural oil regulating skin care ingredients like geranium or camphor (more drying). Suitable liquid based or spray on suncreen for oily skin that won't clog pores.

Night Cream: Often the same anti aging skin care moisturizer can be used for night time if it doesn't contain sunscreen.

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Dry Skin

Dry skin has a lack of natural oil. It occurs naturally with age where the skin produces less sebum. However dry skin can be a sign of poor diet, health problems and a hormone imbalance.

Dry skin appears thin and transparent in colour. It can be flaky and rough and the pores are not clearly visible.

I have found that an increase of essential fatty acids in the diet is helpful for treating dry skin. My advice is to take a daily supplement of fishoil or flaxseed oil. It makes a big difference. See Essential Fatty Acids for more information.

Cleanser: Anti aging cleansing lotion or cream for dry skin. The cleanser must be so gentle to only remove dirt.

Toner: Gentle alcohol free toner containing ingredients suitable for dry skin like neroli, ylang ylang, camomile

Exfoliant: Exfoliating mask or fine scrub once a week.

Mask: Nourishing oil bases mask once to two times per week.

Day Cream: Rich creamy oil based anti aging moisturiser. Products containing Hyaluronic Acid can help protecting a dry skin during the day against moisture loss by binding moisture (water) to the surface layers of the skin. Use a sunscreen if not contained in the day cream.

Night Cream: Oil based moisturiser that replenishes the skin at night.

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Mature Skin

Mature skin occurs usually from the age of 50 onwards. However some skins can age prematurely due to a lack of care, diet, stress and other factors that speed up the aging process.

A mature skin shows deeps lines, a slack muscle tone, dryness and pigmentation marks. A good skin care regime will help to improve some of the aging signs. However in most cases surgical or non surgical skin treatments are more efficient.

Due to the dry nature of a mature skin, the skin care regime of a dry skin combined with highly effective anti aging ingredients are recommended.

Anti aging skin care ingredients that work are listed at Anti Aging Cosmetic Product.

Skin Conditions

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin has a lack of water. A sign of dehydration is often fine lines around eyes, lower cheeks and forehead.

Dehydrated skin occures often in climates having strong UV emission. An insufficient water intake may be the cause of this skin condition. A daily intake of at least 2 litres of clean, purified water is essential to treat dehydrated skin.

Cleanser: Gentle anti aging cleansing milk or gel

Toner: Hydrating toner

Exfoliant: Exfoliating scrub once a week

Mask: Nourishing mask once a week

Day Cream: Hydrating water based anti aging moisturiser containing moisture binding ingredients and sunscreen.

Night Cream: Deep moisturising anti aging night skin care cream to restore and replenish the moisture loss during the day.

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice For Sensitive Skin

Sensitivity can occur with any skin type. Sensitivity could be a genetic tendency or a reaction to products applied to the skin. Poor diet, toxicity and a body that is highly acid can cause sensitive skin.

In order to treat sensitivity I advice to find out the causes as it is often causes from internal imbalances.

Products that are fragrant free and hypoallergenic are the safest choice.

Cleanser: Gentle anti aging cleansing milk or cream

Toner: Mild toner for sensitive skin containing soothing ingredients like chamomile

Exfoliant: Depending on severity, little or no exfoliation is recommended.

Mask: Soothing mask once to twice per week

Day Cream: Your day skin care moisturiser should have the consistency to suit your skin type and contain soothing ingredients that suit a sensitive skin like Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, camomile. Some sensitive skin can not bare suncreen. In that case, the only option is to stay out of the sun and always wear a sun hat.

Night Cream: The same as the anti aging day cream.

Anti Aging Skin Care Advice for Combination Skin

A combination skin can have any of the above skin types at different areas of the face. The most common combination skin type is the oily T-Zone with dry or normal skin on the cheeks. Ideally the different areas should be treated differently. However, this is often not an easy task. My anti aging skin care advice is to use products that help balance your skin type in combination with Anti Aging Skin Care Supplements for a healthy skin from within. Use special treatments for the problem area as outlined above.

Pigmentation are usually refered to as brown patches on the skin. Increases pigmentation is associated with age. There are different skin disorders that are caused by the pigment melanin in the skin:

Chloasma: Brown patches caused by the increased production of melanin in the skin usually due to sunexposure and hormonal imbalances.

Vitiligo: A lack of melanin and shows as white patches on the skin.
