Essential Fatty Acids The Anti Aging Super Fat!
Along with a Multi Vitamin, Mineral and Antioxidant I always recommend Essential Fatty Acids for your health, skin and anti aging. It is a true super fat. Scientists have long discovered that the omega 3 in particular has great health benefits. The typical western diet contains less omega 3 as we're eating more processed foods, while cultures which diets are rich in fish do not have to supplements their diets.
Fatty acids, omega 3 and 9 are brain food, for a healthy brain and prevention from degeneration.
But the benefits of Omega 3, 6 and 9 don't stop there. They can help maintain normal, healthy heart function, brain cell membrane development, nerve and myelin function, growth and development of infants and children and helps maintain good joint health. Not to mention the benefits for skin, hair and nails.
What Are Essential Fatty Acids?
Saturated fat and trans-fatty acids are the "bad fats", which can cause high (bad) cholesterol levels.
Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the "good fats".
Omega 3 and 6 are polyunsaturated fatty acids classified as essential because they cannot be synthesized in the body. They must be obtained from food.
Omega 9 is a polyunsaturated fat but not yet classed as essential as it can be created by the body from saturated fats.
Omega 3, 6 and 9 - Food Sources
Omega 3
Can be found in cold water oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines.
Fishoil has got the richest source of Omega 3, however its also found in eggs and plants like Chia, Flax, Lingonberry, Sea buckthorn and Hemp.
Omega 6
Found in cereals, whole-grain breads most vegetable oils as well as eggs and poultry
Omega 9
Found in animal fat and vegetable oil.
The refining, processing and storage of our food means that most of the goodness are lost.
Omega 3, 6, 9 Supplements
Omega 3-6-9 Supplements are an easy way to optain all the essential fatty acids in your diet.
Omega 3 unsaturated fatty acids contain the following essential fatty acids:
- AHA (a-linolenic acid)
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)
Omega 6 contain linoleic acid and Omega 9 oleic acid.
Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil are the most beneficial.
For vegetarians, flaxseed oil and other cold pressed oils are mostly used in supplements. Oils should be organic and processed in a way that they dont loose their goodness.
Loosing Fat with Fat?
The essential omega 3 fatty acids help with fat metabolism. They supply fuel for energy production and help transport vital fat soluble vitamins.
Our western diet contains more Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids than the important omega 3s. Its important to have a balance of all essential fatty acids. Most people lack of Omega 3 and can benefit from an omega 3 supplement.
Hydration For The Skin
Any skin type can benefit from omega 3 and 6.
Essential fatty acids are known as the hydrating supplements for the skin. They have the ability to repair damage in the cell membranes and prevent water loss.
When we're aging the overall water content in the body drops a significant 15%. This water loss has been blamed on the damage to the cell membrane. The damaged cells lose their ability to hold onto water.
For the skin it means that the cells that are deep in the layers of the skin lack of water which appears as lines and wrinkles on the skin.
Even though we are able to hydrate the upper layers of the skin by using products that attrack and hold the moisture, the dehydration from deep inside the skin needs to be addressed from the inside with nutrition.
Daniela's Beauty Tip for Essential Fatty Acids
As a Beauty Therapist I know how beneficial essential fatty acids are for the skin and therefore recommend them on a daily basis.
Its Omega 3 Magic on the skin. Omega 3 essential fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. Inflammation is caused by an unhealthy diet and toxicity of the body. Inflammed skin appears red flushed, sensitive and irritated.
I treat many skin condition from the inside with Omega 3 fish oil. A classic example is eczema, which improves dramatically with adding omegas in the diet. The skin becomes more supple and healthy.
